Microsuction usually feels like a light pulling, tickling or suction sensation. You may hear a suction sound during treatment. Most patients find the appointment comfortable and straightforward.

You will be booked for a 30-minute appointment so your visit is not rushed. This allows time for your doctor to listen, examine your ears, provide treatment where appropriate and explain aftercare.

To give the best chance of removing the wax in a single appointment, we recommend using Earol, a pharmaceutical-grade olive oil spray, twice daily for at least five days before your appointment, unless a clinician has advised you not to use ear drops.

Earol helps soften and lubricate hard or impacted wax, which can make microsuction easier and more comfortable. However, even with the correct preparation, it may not always be clinically safe or possible to remove all the wax in a single appointment.

If you have ear pain, discharge, a known or suspected eardrum perforation, or have previously had ear surgery, please contact the clinic before using any ear drops.

If no ear wax is found, your doctor will still assess the ear canal and eardrum and explain whether another ear-related condition may be contributing to your symptoms. You will be advised on the most appropriate next steps for your findings.

Most patients can have their wax removed in a single appointment. Occasionally, the wax may remain too hard, deep or impacted, or the ear canal may be too sensitive for removal to be completed safely.

Your doctor will not continue if doing so could cause unnecessary discomfort or injury. If complete removal is not possible, they will explain the next steps and may provide further instructions or recommend suitable ear drops to soften the remaining wax before you return.

If your doctor recommends a microsuction follow-up appointment, this is charged at a reduced fee of £50.

Our clinic is registered with the Care Quality Commission, the independent regulator of health and social care services in England. Not every high-street ear wax removal or audiology service operates within the same CQC-regulated clinical framework.

Your appointment involves considerably more than simply removing wax. Your doctor will consider your symptoms and medical history and carefully examine the ear canal and eardrum. This allows us to identify other possible causes of blocked ears, pain, discharge, itching or hearing changes, including infection, inflammation, eczema, eardrum problems and middle-ear conditions.

Where wax removal is clinically appropriate, microsuction is carried out under direct vision using ENT-grade microscope equipment. If another ear condition is identified, our doctors can often investigate and manage it directly. Where appropriate, we can provide private prescriptions, arrange ear swabs and organise further investigations, including MRI scans, without routinely sending you back to your GP for a separate referral. If a serious or urgent concern is identified, our clinicians can contact or refer you directly to the appropriate local ENT service.
