Your appointment includes a careful discussion of your symptoms, digital examination of both ears, microsuction wax removal where clinically appropriate, images or video where useful, and clear aftercare advice. A full hearing assessment and free follow-up appointment are included if clinically required. If wax removal is not safe or appropriate on the day, your doctor will explain why and advise on the next step.

If no wax is found, your appointment will be converted to a Private ENT Consultation so your doctor can assess other possible causes of blocked, painful or uncomfortable ears. This may include infection, inflammation, eustachian tube dysfunction, middle-ear problems, tinnitus or hearing change.

CQC guidance explains that earwax removal is a regulated activity when a listed healthcare professional and patient agree intervention is needed and the treatment is carried out by a listed healthcare professional. As a doctor-led clinic, we believe patients should choose a properly regulated clinical setting for ear wax removal wherever possible.

Microsuction is widely regarded as the gold standard for ear wax removal in specialist ear-care settings. It is performed under direct vision, allowing the clinician to see the ear canal clearly while removing wax with precision. Nottingham Ear Clinic does not routinely recommend ear syringing or irrigation because water-based methods may be less suitable for some patients, particularly where there is previous ear surgery, perforation risk, infection, inflammation or a sensitive ear canal.

If you are able to use olive oil ear drops or spray for up to 3 days before your appointment, this can help soften wax and make removal more comfortable. If you have pain, discharge, a suspected perforation or recent ear surgery, please do not use drops unless advised by a clinician.
