Inner-ear balance conditions
Dizziness and vertigo
Dizziness and Vertigo Linked to Ear Symptoms
Dizziness and vertigo can be unsettling. Some balance symptoms are related to the inner ear, but dizziness can also be caused by blood pressure, medication, neurological conditions, migraine, anxiety or other medical issues.
What patients notice
Common symptoms and signs
Symptoms can overlap between different ear conditions. The safest first step is a careful clinical assessment so treatment is based on what is actually seen and heard during your appointment.
- Spinning sensation or vertigo
- Feeling off balance or unsteady
- Dizziness with ear pressure or hearing change
- Nausea linked to movement
- Recurrent episodes after position changes
Possible causes
What could be causing this?
The cause can vary from person to person. Your clinician will consider your symptoms, medical history and ear examination findings before advising on the most appropriate next step.
Middle-ear pressure or infection
Migraine-associated dizziness
Medication or blood pressure causes
Neurological or general medical causes
How we can help
Doctor-led assessment at Nottingham Ear Clinic
Nottingham Ear Clinic can examine the ears and assess whether symptoms may be linked to ear disease. If symptoms suggest a non-ear cause or urgent concern, patients will be advised to seek appropriate medical care.

- Swelling, redness or tenderness spreading around the ear
- High temperature, feeling very unwell, diabetes or reduced immune function
If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening or concerning, please contact your GP, NHS 111, an urgent treatment centre or 999 in an emergency.
